Recruitment Company Shares Body Language Tips to Keep in Mind During Your Next Job Interview

You did it! You aced your resume and cover letter, and you scored an interview soon. You get out your best attire, iron and steam your linen, polish your shoes, and eventually, it’s time. As you’re preparing yourself for your interview, there are a lot of things you should keep in mind, especially whenever it comes to your body language. As a provider of employment services in Vancouver, WA, Express Employment Professionals is here to share some valuable tips to help you present your best self. Even if you don’t do perfectly in your job interview, these tips can still be beneficial to help you get as close to perfect as possible.

Before we get into everything, you should really understand what body language is and why it’s important. Your body language is anything your body is saying without being verbal. These non-speaking actions can be anything from your posture to fidgeting with your papers or pens. It can happen without any thought, and they really are what can form people’s ideas or judgments of you. In the end, those judgments can be what’ll get you hired or pushed back into the job search. The employer already has an image of you based on what your resume and the cover letter said, so you must be sure you match or even exceed their expectations. Body language communicates so much more than people think, and with these tips, you’ll show a positive demeanor without having to say it explicitly.

  • Make a good first impression and include eye contact.

As soon as you enter the building, someone will be watching you, whether its other employees like the receptionist or the cameras. Because of this, you need to show confidence and sophistication by being polite to every person you encounter. Just because they’re not a hiring manager doesn’t mean they can’t have an influence on whether or not you’re hired. If you are brought to a secondary location to wait, don’t play on your phone. You should sit upright in a comfortable position to avoid looking bored or uninterested. If there are other people waiting with you, maybe spark up some small conversations to see how their day is going. You should also have a good amount of eye contact to show that you’re focused and, again, confident. Avoiding eye contact can make you seem distracted, or even unmotivated. An interview should feel like a normal, yet formal, conversation. Be sure you aren’t staring uncomfortably, though! You want to be warm and conversational, not creepy and weird.

  • Posture is key.

Your posture states a lot about you as a person, so in an interview, you should always tell a good story with your body posture. Slouching can make you appear lazy and tired while being too stiff can make you appear uncomfortable. It’s good to find a healthy medium that makes you appear loose while also professional.

  • Be mindful of your hands and end strong.

While your posture is a key element in body image, one of the next biggest factors of a confident body image is what your hands do. If you naturally talk with your hands, don’t hold it back! It can help you communicate properly and truthfully. If you aren’t the one talking, trying to hold your hands still in a neutral position to avoid any attention. The best place to hold them is said to be on the table in front of you because it will help you not slouch, but your lap can work too. If you are taking notes, be sure to put your pen down to prevent yourself from clicking the end or fidgeting with it.

You should keep all these tips in mind until you leave the building and return home. Give a firm handshake, a sincere smile, and thank the interviewer before leaving. You need to keep your energy up even if you feel as though it went poorly because it will make you seem motivated and hopeful. Try to maintain your composure until you’re far enough from the building, then allow yourself to take a breath and process everything.

No matter how the interview goes, there is a job out there just waiting for you to find it, so keep your head high and never give up. If you enjoyed these tips or want more information, try visiting Express Vancouver, WA, an employment agency dedicated to helping the community.
